Puppy Care Guide
Practical guidance to help you get started, written for first-time and experienced dachshund owners alike.
Feeding
Dachshunds have a big appetite in a small body, so portion control matters as much as nutrition quality. We'll send you home with the feeding schedule your puppy already knows.
- Stick to a high-quality puppy food for the first year — sudden changes can upset a sensitive tummy.
- Feed 3–4 small meals a day until about 6 months, then transition to two.
- Watch portions closely — dachshunds are prone to weight gain, which is hard on their long backs.
Health & Vet Care
Every puppy leaves us with a clean bill of health, but their first year still has a few important milestones. Your vet becomes your best partner in keeping your pup healthy for years to come.
- Schedule a wellness check within the first week of bringing your puppy home.
- Keep up with the vaccination and deworming schedule included in your puppy's records.
- Ask your vet about spay/neuter timing and breed-specific back-health precautions.
Training Basics
Dachshunds are smart, a little stubborn, and eager to please the right person. Early, consistent, positive-reinforcement training goes a long way.
- Start crate and potty training the day you get home — consistency matters more than speed.
- Keep sessions short and rewarding; five focused minutes beats thirty distracted ones.
- Enroll in a puppy socialization class once your vet clears group settings.
Grooming
Grooming needs depend on coat type — smooth, long-haired, or wire-haired — but every dachshund benefits from a simple, regular routine.
- Brush weekly (or more for long-haired coats) to manage shedding and prevent mats.
- Trim nails every few weeks to protect their joints and posture.
- Check ears regularly, especially for floppy-eared pups prone to moisture buildup.
